5: Angel Beats

Angel Beats makes it into the list not because the Character Deaths are in any way sad (Well their Prologue Deaths are heart wrenching but that’s another story) but because the deaths in this anime are pure comedy gold. You see in the world of Angel Beats all the characters cannot die…well actually they can but it’s only temporary and they will wake up moments later good as new. This is because the characters are already dead and are stuck in a purgatory in the form of a high school. This sets up hilarious situations that would be devastating in a normal slice of life Anime but with the characters immortality it creates hijinks galore.
Need to cross a spike pit? Use your companion as a bridge. Need to punish your club for insubordination? Starve them to death. Need to create a distraction? Rocket propel your own chair through the roof with the strangest music playing in the background!!

 
4: Shingeki no kyojin

In a world where humanity is pushed to the brink of extinction by gigantic creatures named titan’s, death is abound. Hell, series creator, Hajime Isayama, even admitted that the reason he created such a large cast of characters was so that he could kill off as many as possible without completely destroying the story.
The deaths that stand out though are those of Petra, Eldo and Olou in episode 21. These characters are established as ultimate bad-asses, elite of the recon squad. Each of them have their personalities and your love for them grow over the several episodes that they appear in. They tell Eren (the main character) to trust in them and everyone knows that when it comes to anime, friendship and trust is the most powerful weapon in existence and for a time it seems like they are right as they push back the Ferocious female titan that had destroyed complete squads andthey put it on the defensive… that is until it all goes wrong.
In one of the most unexpected twists, each of the characters are just swatted out of the air like flies. This shows the naivety of Eren in trusting others completely instead of making his own choices and in the end, Eren made the wrong choice.

 
3: Death Note

The word “Death” is in the title. Honestly you should expect to see a lot of murder and deaths coming when dealing with Light and his Death note, a journal which kills the person whose name is written in it.
The top death scene of this show comes from L, the eccentric that is investigating Light as a suspect of the murders caused by the death note. What Makes this death so sad is that due to his investigation, L starts spending a lot of time with Light and as time goes on it seems like they grow a real friendship with many real and sincere heartfelt interactions between the two taking place. Theres a brief spark in the viewer that this friendship can turn Light around from his evil ways as it seems that he genuinely cares about L.
Then it happens….
As soon as Light gets the opportunity, he kills L without a moment’s hesitation with a slashers grin on his face. Light smiles as he kills his closest friend, showing off what a magnificent bastard he truly is.

 
2: Code Geas: Lelouch of the Rebellion

This is a shocker, as the main protagonist of the show that you have come to respect and love over 2 seasons, Lelouch is killed by his closest friend who is using Lelouch’s own persona, zero, to do so.
What makes this death so gut wrenching is that Lelouch was the one that planned his own death, asking his best friend to commit the sin all in the name of world peace as Lelouch uses his power as king of Britannia to become known as the most evil man on the planet, all to unite the world against a common enemy.
Both Lelouch and his best friend sacrifice something in this plan, for Lelouch it is his life while for Suzaku, he sacrifices his identity, forever subjected to hide behind the Zero persona for the rest of his life.
The most Heart-breaking aspect of this death scene isn’t the actual death but it’s when you realise that in trying to save the world, Lelouch sacrifices himself being remembered as a destroyer of worlds and a madman by the same people he united together. For this Lelouch deserves the second spot for his sacrifice.

 
1: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

The first few episodes of Gurren Lagann are really deceiving. The whole time it would be easy to assume that the character leading the vessel in the intro as well as the main character of the series was Kamina, The stalwart leader of the Gurren Brigade.
In one of the most amazing and gut wrenching sequences that has ever graced your screen Kamina is taken away from us. He’s amazing speeches and happy-go-lucky attitude that revved us up for each episode forever stop as Kamina fades into a blaze of Glory.
What makes this death so amazing is that in Kamina’s last few moments he gives his best friend, Simon, the courage and confidence to become the man to save all spiral races in the universe. It is this one scene in the entire series that sets the pace and allows a hero to be born.
Kamina we will all miss you so very much.
