S.O.P.A Claims Megaupload and Megavideo

Tragic events going on. Megavideo and megaupload were shut down due to the S.O.P.A and PIPA act today. You will be missed. R.I.P

On 19 January 2012, Federal prosecutors in Virginia closed down Megaupload and charged its founder Kim Dotcom and others with allegedly breaching copyright infringement laws.

Was this because of SOPA or DMCA? I thought sopa/pipa would try to pass this next Monday.

The Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against Megaupload.com on Thursday, arresting its founder -- Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz -- in New Zealand and charging her and at least five other company executives with violating privacy laws.

I think what they just did is illegal as the law has not passed yet. So i think they could take this to court and try to see what they can do about it.

They've always had the power to do this, they've done it before, they can do it now. SOPA and PIPA however would make it way easier, and they have more authority. The timing to do this though, it's like they're threatening the people, them motherfuckers don't know who they're messing with though.

Pretty much this. Where SOPA is more stringent about the laws, illegal media distribution was already illegal. And Megaupload was one of the biggest hubs for sharing it.

Yeah that's true, i was looking at it the wrong way. It doesn't matter if they took down megaupload there is many more out there that do the same job, and there will be many more to come. If SOPA passes that would be another story all together. The only reason i see they want to pass SOPA is because this way they can take down not only one site, but many at the same time.

Edit: I almost forgot, making signatures would be illegal under SOPA.
