I use a program called rainmeter for the RSS feeds and all the other desktop objects. There's custom skins and fully customizable objects you can mess around with. These were from three different rainmeter skins. You can download it here http://rainmeter.net/cms/ and then try using a beginners skin so you can get the feel for everything. Enigma is a good one to start out with http://rainmeter.net/cms/SuitesEnigma after that you can try getting differnt skins and then mix and match stuff you like from differnt skins.
