A gunman armed with an automatic weapon, who witnesses said looked approximately aged 25, entered the Ridderhof mall, a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn, and shot five people dead before turning the weapon on himself. Many shoppers in the centre panicked before it was evacuated and cordoned off.[1] Later that day, one of the injured passed away, raising the total number of dead to 7[4]. The gunman left a note in his car stating that bombs had been left in three malls in the city; these malls were subsequently evacuated[5]. Children were among the victims, but it is not yet known if they were among the dead [6]. One week before the incident, there was another shooting in Alphen aan de Rijn. The shootings were apparently unrelated.[3]
